All Indian students are given the chance by the US government to study there, but in order to do so, they must first get a student visa.

For Indian students who want to study in the United States and are applying for a USA study visa, the following are some crucial application guidelines.

TYPES OF USA STUDY VISA

The university or sponsoring institution will choose the USA visa type based on the applicant’s application profile for a particular course; visa applicants are not required to choose a visa type.

The many categories of student visas for the USA are listed below:

F-1 Student Visa

An F-1 Student Visa is given to foreign students who apply to study full-time in a US institution or university that is approved by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

F-2 Dependent of an F-1 Student

Dependents of F-1 student visa holders are eligible for this study visa, however they are not permitted to study in the USA with it. Children with F-2 dependent visas are eligible to attend K–12 schools in the USA.

M-1 Vocational Student Visa

An M-1 visa will be granted to a foreign student studying in the USA on a vocational programme. International students are required to complete their full course of study, and part-time study is only permitted with the Designated School Official’s permission (DSO).

M-2 Dependent of M-1 Student

Dependents of M-1 Vocational Student Visa holders are eligible for this study visa, however they are not permitted to study in the USA with it. Children with M-2 Dependent visas are eligible to attend K–12 schools in the USA.

J-1 Exchange Student Visa

J-1 visa holders are required to maintain a full course of study, but they may shorten it if Department of State (DOS) requirements are followed and the SEVIS Responsible Officer (RO)/Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) of the designated programme sponsor grants their request.

J-1 Exchange Student Intern Visa

International students who are currently enrolled and pursuing a degree at a post-secondary academic institution outside of the US are granted this visa.

J-1 Exchange Visitor: Professor, Researcher, Specialist, Trainee, Physician, Intern

Professor, Researcher, Specialist, Trainee, Physician, Intern International students that are sponsored by an exchange visitor programme that has been approved by the DOS and are visiting researchers, short-term scholars, professors, specialists, physicians, trainees, or interns.

J-2 Dependent of a J-1 Exchange Visitor

Dependents of J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa holders may apply for it, which allows them to pursue full- or part-time studies in the United States.

STEPS INVOLVED IN THE USA STUDENT VISA APPLICATION PROCESS

The visa application process starts with the receipt of an I-20.

  • Pay your SEVIS fee (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System)
  • Complete online visa application form
  • Pay US visa fee at the nominated bank
  • Book your visa interview appointment
  • Attend your visa interview

F-1 Student Visa

According to the norms and regulations, a foreign student must continue their complete course of study, and part-time study is only permitted with the DSO’s (Designated School Official) consent.

International students are permitted to work 20 hours per week during the week and 40 hours per week during the weekends under the F-1 student visa.

The international student must have finished one academic year of their degree in order to qualify for OPT. A 24-month extension of OPT may be available to those who have finished a degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) (36 months total).

F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Optional Practical Training is a way for F-1 students to combine their academic curriculum with work experience, although the work must be connected to their major field of study, such as:

  • Actuarial Science
  • Engineering Technologies
  • Science Technologies
  • Medical Scientist
  • Biological and Biomedical Sciences
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Computer Science (excluding data entry/microcomputer applications)
  • Engineering
  • Physical Sciences

The employer must be enrolled with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services-mandated E-Verify Employment Verification Programme in order to qualify for a 24-month extension.

J-1 Exchange Student Visa

International students are permitted to work on campus for a maximum of 20 hours per week during the week and full-time during the weekends under the J-1 student visa, but only with the prior consent of the Responsible Officers (RO) or Alternate Responsible Officers (ARO) of their designated programme.

J-1 visa holders are permitted to pursue 18 months of PAT (up to 36 months for post-doctoral training).
